Inspired by the iconic Three Sisters rock formation in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, this expressive abstract landscape pays tribute to the ancient beauty, cultural heritage and enduring spirit of the Australian wilderness.
Standing proudly above the Jamison Valley on the traditional lands of the Gundungurra and Darug peoples, the Three Sisters hold deep cultural significance and are connected to generations of Aboriginal storytelling. One widely shared legend tells of three sisters, Meehni, Wimlah and Gunnedoo, who were transformed into stone to protect them during a time of conflict. Different versions of these stories exist, reflecting the rich cultural traditions and enduring connection Aboriginal peoples have with Country.
Through loose, gestural brushstrokes and a palette of earthy ochres, muted greens, soft blues and warm rust tones, I have sought to capture the rugged sandstone cliffs, shifting light and expansive beauty of this remarkable landscape. The painting evokes a sense of timelessness, inviting the viewer to reflect on the stories held within the land and the powerful connection between nature, history and memory.
This artwork is a celebration of Australia's ancient landscapes and the quiet strength of a place that continues to inspire wonder, curiosity and a profound sense of belonging.
